Out of the Celluloid Closet II: Producing
Gay Feature Films
The Festival films are as diverse as the gay community itself, with
different viewpoints, experiences and most certainly countries represented.
This year we again host an international panel of directors of feature
films who will speak about their experiences of conceiving, producing and
marketing their projects. Why are these films all comedies? Where
are the lesbian-directed features? How do and should gay films find
a mainstream audience? Whether you are simply an avid film-goer who
wants to know more about how independent gay films get made, or a filmmaker
with an idea who wants some pointers on how to get your own movie off the
ground, this is the place to be. With directors Greg Berlanti
(The Broken Hearts League),
Stéphane Giusti (Why
Not Me?), Patrik-Ian Polk (Punks)
and Féix Sabroso (Perdona
bonita, pero Lucas me quería a mí). Moderated
by Miami-based filmmaker and Festival Program Committee member Frances
Negrón.
Thursday April 13 at 5:00 PM at the Colony Theater. Free and open
to the public.
Remembrance of Things Past: Gay and
Lesbian History on Film
Capturing gay and lesbian history on the flickering screen has been
an important project for our community over the past three decades since
the Stonewall rebellion and the emergence of a mass gay political movement.
From filming interviews with often unknown elders, whose stories
will disappear as they pass away, perhaps never to be recorded by mainstream
historians, to mining the archives of cinema history for images long forgotten
or never viewed through a gay lens, to documenting more recent events that
in themselves form an ongoing historical record, independent gay and lesbian
filmmakers have broken new ground. Join visiting directors and some of
our very own South Florida filmmakers, who as a group have made some of
the most important gay historical films, for a lively discussion witheach
other and the audience. With Oscar Award-winning filmmaker Rob Epstein
(Paragraph 175, Celluloid
Closet, The Times of Harvey Milk), renowned Cuban-American filmmaker Sergio
Giral (Chronicle of an Ordinance,
El otro San Francisco, Techo de vidrio) and Dyke TV founder Mary Patierno
(The Most Unknowable Thing).
Moderated by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and Festival Director Robert
Rosenberg (Before Stonewall).
Friday April 14 at 5:00 PM at the Colony Theater. Free and
