Chronicle of an Ordinance
Directed by Sergio Giral

WORLD PREMIERE

5:00 PM
Regal Cinema

A controversial commission vote.  A petition drive.  A voter referendum.  Sound like a familiar tune?  For Miami lesbians and gays, the same song has been playing for the past 23 years, ever since singer Anita Bryant led a successful campaign against thecounty's first gay rights ordinance in 1977.  Now, as Miami-Dade prepares to write yet another chapter in this ongoing story with a new referendum battle this fall, award-winning Cuban-American director Sergio Giral's documentary couldn't be more timely.  It tells the story of the fight to pass the new 1998 law banning discrimination in housing, employment , public accommodations and finance based on sexual orientation.  With interviews from both sides of the issue and fascinating historical footage, it places the current battle in a broader context.  By doing so, it offers a timely reminder of how far we have come - and have yet to go.
Director Sergio Giral will attend the screening and discuss his work with the audience.

Preceded by Sexual Exiles, Dir. Irene Sosa, United States, FLORIDA PREMIERE
Many gay and lesbian immigrants to this country have fled the lands of their birth for the relative freedom of life in the United States.  Director Irene Sosa, herself a native Venezuelan living in New York, profiles a group of women and men from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa who have chosen to make the U.S. their home, and yet miss the roots they have left behind.  The question is, what is lost in the equation, and what is gained, for these "sexual exiles."  In English and Spanish with English subtitles.
Director Irene Sosa will attend the screening and discuss her work with the audience.

5:00 PM Screening at the Regal South Beach Cinema $10
