  Scene from Inconscientes (Unconscious)

The beautiful Spanish actress Leonor Watling, who played the comatose ballet dancer in Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her (2002), takes over the screen in Goya-Award winning director Joaquin Oristell's blissfully comic Inconscientes (Unconscious), MGLFF's July Monthly Screening Special Event.

Leonor Watling
Leonor Watling
It's 1913 in modern and sophisticated Barcelona, and Watling plays Mrs. Alma Pardo, the pregnant wife of psychiatrist Dr. Leon Pardo, and known to be one of the most progressive women of her time. Dr. Pardo has recently imported the ground-breaking and controversial theories of the unconscious put forth by Dr. Sigmund Freud to great acclaim yet suddenly suffers a mysterious breakdown and completely vanishes. The distraught Alma, never one to repress even a single emotion (and never failing to stop to analyze her feelings as she is feeling them!), calls upon Leon's brother, Dr. Salvador Pardo, to help find her missing husband. Salvador, also a psychiatrist, is deeply conservative and contemptuous of Freud - yet can't quite come to grips with his lust for his brother's wife!

Hilariously, director Oristell drops clues that the reason for Leon's disappearance is that in exploring his own unconscious, he has gone hysterical when faced with secret desires that may be - gasp! - homosexual in nature! That's not the only cat that gets let out of the cage. Soon Alma and Salvador are encountering a secret society underneath the Barcelonan surface full of cross-dressers, exhibitionists, adulterers and taboo-shattering incest fantasizers!

Nominated for 5 Goya (Spanish Academy Awards) earlier this year, Inconscientes is a zany, zippy, sophisticated Spanish farce completely daring in its use of repressed homosexual desires to poke meditative fun at what we think we know about the intricacies of our egos! Lushly designed and detailed, making full use of its period setting, Inconscientes was a hit at the recent Toronto International, Sundance and Miami International Film Festivals.

No theatrical commercial release has yet been set for this film. Don't miss this special opportunity to see it as Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival's July monthly screening!

PLEASE NOTE: Our offices will be closed on Monday, July 4th in observance of the holiday and also on July 8th & 11th.
Ticket sales at the door on July 27th are CASH ONLY
