At the heart of this sharp and twisting psychological thriller is the most complex, heroic and fully human transsexual protagonist ever seen on film. Robinson Stevenin won the French equivalent of an Oscar for his tender and riveting portrait of Bo, a beautiful young performer caught up in a grisly murder mystery that rocks the transgendered underground of Brussels. Bo may be ravishing and popular, but she suffers from the reopened wounds of childhood trauma. She may fall for her sadistic rough - trade neighbor, Johnny (the smoldering Stephane Metzger), but once she spots that embarrassing bulge in his pants, she knows she has power. She may get knocked around by police and hoodlums alike, but when she fights back, she uses blunt force - and she draws blood. Swirling around Bo are a terrifying series of prostitute killings, an escalating battle between good cops, bad cops, stud cops and troll cops, a coterie of damaged and duplicitous drag queens, and an ever - thickening web of emotional intrigue. With its raw tension and endless plot twists, Transfixed harkens back to early Paul Verhoeven or Pedro Almodóvar, putting the past decade of tepid crime thrillers to shame. In the expert hands of director Francis Girod, this is a lush, stylish and fully contemporary take on the "woman on the run" suspense film, a psychosexual masterpiece that gets under your skin - and stays there.
