Imagine the most sensual, rapturously homoerotic chronicle of life in the streets of Mexico City, and you might have an inkling of the hypnotic fever dream that is this artfully made mood piece. Shot in rich shades of black-and-white, the film follows the aimless wanderings of 17-year-old Gerardo, a streetwise, baby-faced punk with alluring dark eyes, full lips, and the appealing naivété of the young and infatuated. Hopelessly smitten with a handsome stranger after a brief but blissful rendezvous, Gerardo travels from bedroom to back room in his quixotic quest to recapture, in the arms of other men, that moment of intimacy that remains ever so teasingly out of reach. Writer-director Julián Hernández's camera glides through the dark alleys and dilapidated working class neighborhoods of his nation's capital with fluid elegance, and what emerges from his labor of love is a lyrical character study that succeeds as both a vivid portrait of marginalized youth and a tone poem that thrives on the sheer beauty of its images while never feeling the least bit pretentious. Enhanced by a soundtrack that features some of the most haunting Mexican boleros ever recorded, Mil nubes de paz weaves a spellbinding web of desire and longing that goes directly to your subconscious and never lets go.
