Elevator sex! Politically motivated man-to-man fornication! Che Guevara as an aphrodisiac?! Welcome to the cheerfully depraved world of Canadian bad boy Bruce LaBruce (Hustler White, Skin Flick). His latest foray into high camp is an irreverent satire of anti-corporate sentiment and radical chic that explores the relationship between terrorism and pornography with tongue placed firmly in, er, cheeks. At the center of this anarchic yarn is Gudrun, charismatic leader, sexual nymph and sole female member of the Berlin-based revolutionary group The Raspberry Reich. Using her body as a bullhorn, she subscribes to the belief that the revolution is her boyfriend. In order to propagate her "homosexual intifada" and bring media attention to the group, she hatches a plot to kidnap the son of the wealthiest banker in Germany and have him videotaped as the hunky "straight" terrorists who follow her doctrines use the seemingly innocent victim to free themselves from heterosexual repression. In typical LaBruce fashion, the numerous sex scenes are raunchy, titillating, and 100% real. From its clever, Godardian use of screen captions as propaganda to the big Bonnie & Clyde-style finale, The Raspberry Reich is great, dirty fun. Now, if we could only get LaBruce to convert to capitalism, he could print his radical messages on queer festival T-shirts: "Masturbation Is Counter Revolutionary," "Heterosexuality is the Opiate of the Masses"! There might be some interest.
