Presented by Manuela Kay
Germany, 2004, dvd, 105 min.
North American Premiere

From the supposedly first gay character ever shown in a movie in Anders als die Anderen (Different from the others, Germany 1919) to the confident and funny portrayal of modern lesbians in Tan de repente (Suddenly, Argentina 2002), journalist and writer Manuela Kay, who works for the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film, presents the North American premiere of Out im Kino, an entertaining and non-scientific approach to the story of queer cinema based on the film guide, of the same name, which Kay co-authored.

In chronicling nearly 100 years of clichés and climaxes on the big screen, Kay will examine how gay and lesbian audiences never really found their own reality in the movies, with a few exceptions until the 70s. Clips from films made under the "Hays Code" establish the worst clichés about homosexuals. Covering early experimental work, a look at new queer cinema and the final discovery of homosexuality in Hollywood cinema, Kay promises to deliver lots of funny anecdotes mixed with behind-the-scenes-knowledge.

You need to book early, as the setting is intimate and the seating is limited to 50. Please note that this show is repeated on Saturday, May 1 at 3:00 pm in the Miami Beach Cinematheque.

Total running time: 105 min.
