Lou and Sassafras have a complicated relationship: Lou is a shy butch, Sass is a fearless newly-out femme; they're performance art partners, best friends, and - here's the complicated part - Lou is head-over-heels in love with Sass. And that's all before they move to San Francisco and stumble into the world of eye-popping, bed-hopping S/M dykes. The duo's five-second foray into "traditional lesbian romance" soon gives way to some innocent role-play: Lou is Captain Daddy, aided by a sailor's hat, and Sass, with her resplendent silver tiara, is convincing as the petulant Princess. Of course, they tell themselves, it's just a performance. When Sass, whose sights are set on Micky, a snarling guitarist who's looking for a new twist on her "bad boy" persona - spank, spank! suggests non-monogamy, Lou buries her misgivings about an open relationship, and bottoms out for Chelsea Chuwawa, the bodacious grocery store manager/dominatrix. With a hilarious supporting cast - Val and Leslie, aka Archie and Edith, the miserable married lesbians upstairs, Sass' aging-hippie mom (the indomitable Sally Kirkland), who's re-thinking her own free-love past; Kaz, their queeny gay friend looking for more than a one-night hookup - watching the shenanigans from the sidelines, you know it's all very quickly going to come to a head. With a sly sense of humor and plenty of sex, Mango Kiss is a rollicking, sugar-coated spree through the wacky world of women-whipping-women. And, believe it or not, I'll kiss and tell you that at its heart Mango Kiss is an ode to old-fashioned romance.
Director Sascha Rice, actors Daniele Ferraro / Michelle Wolff and composer Matt Ferraro will attend the screening to discuss the film with the audience.
