"Look behind you!" "Oh my God...grab that knife!" Horror movie audiences love yelling at the unwitting onscreen victims-to-be, begging them in vain to get smart and stay alive. If you thought a video camera in the woods couldn't get any scarier than Blair Witch, think again; that was Maryland; this is Texas, home of leering hunters with pickups and crossbows, sun-parched grasses hiding bloody dead things, murky lakes for afternoon frolicking, and late-night drowning. The titillating twist, of course, is that in place of all those hetero camp counselors in slasher films like Friday The 13th, we've got a randy group of tent-swapping chicks: sporty dyke, lipstick lezzie, uptight vegan, New Age Wiccan, over-sexed and holistic bi-curious. If there is any message to be delivered in the World premiere of Sharon Ferranti's bold new adventure in all-girl terror it might be this: "Never, never, never go camping with your ex-girlfriends!" Unfortunately (for them), these six women ignore that warning at the very beginning of the movie, which leaves us ninety full minutes of raw, lost-in-the-wild fear, with lots of tantalizing sex in between. Made for under $100,000, Make A Wish boasts expert cinematography and a brilliantly unnerving score, vivid proof that a low budget and a rich imagination can yield amazing results. If 2002's girls-in-the-woods classic Guardian of the Frontier was a whimper, this is a full-throated scream. Director Sharon Ferranti, write/producer Lauren Johnson, actor Melenie Flynn and composer Jay Ferranti will attend the screening and discuss the film with the audience.
Total running time: 96 min.
