Laughing Matters follows four celebrated and loved professional stand-up comedians: Kate Clinton, Marga Gomez, Suzanne Westernhoefer and Karen Williams. What unites these talented women is the fact that each of them have been out for the entire duration of their careers. Skillfully cutting between one-on-one interviews and hilarious on-stage performances, Director Meyerson gives us a glimpse into the personal background, struggles, and successes of each entertainer. While Williams jokes that her family were so poor that "if we laughed through dinner we forgot we were meant to be eating," her ability to make people laugh underlines the fact that stand-up, economically, has been her raft as a single lesbian mother. If television now delivers with the aid of your remote; Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Will and Grace and Queer As Folk, Laughing Matters should be applauded for shining a well deserved spotlight on four pioneering comedians, who were declaring their lesbianism to straight audiences, years before Ellen and Rosie finally came out, and two decades before the L Word.
Director Andrea Meyerson will attend the screening to discuss her film with the audience.
