7: 30 a.m.. The post-drinking hunger sets in; you drag yourself to an diner where a tutu clad cook is flambéing some eats. Welcome to milemarker 0, Key West.
Gilbert Baker, the rainbow flag initiator, is given a task to construct the largest rainbow flag to date for the 25th anniversary on June, 15, 2003. Set in motion, the aim is to create a flag that will stretch 1.25 miles across the entire length of Duval Street, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. As the sewing machines bind the strips of color, we are transported on a historical and humanitarian voyage through the island's past. Pivotal in the economic and social revival of Key West in the 80's was the role of the gay and lesbian community, as well as the locals' often humorous and poignant tales of friends and family history, some dating as far back as eight generations in the same house. Key West: City of Colors, is at once, an affirmation of hope and togetherness, a celebration of community and a reminder of the Shangri-la that exists just an afternoon's drive away.
Director Talmadge Hayward will attend the screening to discuss the film with the audience.
