Transphobia and gender politics are the prominent themes in this triad of bold documentaries exploring trans-bashing, the roller coaster ride that is estrogen and testosterone supplementation, and the connection between trans beauty pageants, sex work, and plastic surgery.
Glitter Girls: Transsexuals in the Raw
Dir. Hedda Muskat
United States, 2004, video, 47 min
World Premiere
Each year, transsexuals in Los Angeles compete for a meager $500 to be crowned "Glitter Girl". While the preparations for this beauty pageant are at the heart of this remarkable documentary, the film slowly unravels and reveals itself as a thoughtful treatise on gender and race politics, transphobia, the lesser known economics aspects and the harsh reality of transgendered life in the U.S. If you thought becoming a transsexual meant putting on a hot pink wig, throwing a black feather boa around your neck and strapping on some high-heeled patent leather fuck-me pumps, then you clearly need some education. Glitter Girls gives us a rare peek at a brave, fearless and proud segment of our GLBT community that many of us would do well to embrace and learn from. (Be advised that there is full frontal nudity and pornographic images in this film.)
Executive Producer Howard Barish, Glitter Girl Gia Darling and Producer Barry Shils will attend the screening to discuss the film with the audience.
