It's time to glue on those press-on nails, slap on some makeup and hit the volleyball court, because Thailand's most fabulous tranny athletes are back in the bubbly, irresistibly campy follow-up to our 2001 Festival hit. We find our beloved team in a moment of internal crisis: Star player Nong, along with darling triplets April, May and June, has abandoned the team in order to join a copycat version of the Iron Ladies that puts financial gain above genuine love for the game. It's up to our plucky hero(ine) Jung to save the day, so off she goes to China with token straight playmate Chai to see if she could reunite the "girls" by persuading former player-turned-cabaret sensation Pia to come out of retirement. What appears at first to be a typical sequel storyline, however, turns into something far richer: As Jung and Chai make their way into the People's Republic, director Yongyoot Thongkongtoon takes us back in time to the Ladies' college days in a series of extended flashbacks that yields a more complete portrait of these unlikely sports celebrities. It all culminates in a climactic match that pits the team against their corporate-sponsored doppelgangers, and this time all bets are off! Kudos to the cast and crew for having preserved and enhanced the empowering thrill we got from the first film. Indeed, watching Iron
Ladies II is like revisiting old friends and realizing that they haven't lost their lust for life...or their fierce fashion sense.
