WOMEN AT THE FESTIVAL
Women are not always given their due in the
mixed gay community, but at this yearís Festival youíll find an extraordinary
number of lesbian films, womenís parties and other events. The
parties are mostly described on this page, but please note as well
that for the first time in the Festivalís short history, our closing
night film has a definite lesbian bent - Susan Seidelmanís newest,
Gaudi Afternoon, with a truly stellar cast that includes Judy Davis,
Marcia Gay Harden, Lili Taylor and Juliette Lewis. So come out
and join us for our fabulous final bash (and donít be shy about the
opening gala and other parties either).
Itís hard to focus on any one movie since there
are so many this year, but pay close attention to Just One Time (Jennifer
Esposito as the sultry lesbian neighbor); The Girl (hot French women);
Julie Johnson (Courtney Love and Lili Taylor lock lips); Kaliís
Vibe (black lesbians with a bisexual twist); Desiís Looking for a
New Girl (Latina lesbians do the romance thing); and Stranger Inside
(the latest from the director of The Watermelon Woman). Two
other unique treats are the Sunday morning screening and lunch combo
of History Lessons and the very special appearance of lesbian writer
and film critic B. Ruby Rich with her Lethal Lesbians film clips program.
And no South Florida gal should miss A Florida
Enchantment, a rarely seen silent film about a woman who eats a magic
seed and goes through a gender-bending transformation, with the live
piano accompaniment of Grammy-nominated Barbara Higbie. For
those of you looking for lesbian fare that is just a wee bit more
steamy, our late night X Marks the G-Spot collection should do the
trick ñ you will definitely not be seeing these shorts at Blockbuster
next year. Donít forget the fascinating (and free) panel discussions,
almost all of which include visiting lesbian film directors, and all
the other Festival programs and films which might be of interest to
you. Enjoy the Festival!
