Sex Becomes Her: The True Life Story of Chi Chi LaRue

Directed by Mike Aho

United States

SOUTH FLORIDA PREMIERE

In this breezy new bio-documentary (think of an uncensored "Lifetime Intimate Portrait" with heels, hair and attitude), though Chi Chi herself may wearily claim otherwise, the life of a drag-queen porn director is made to look like seedily glamorous fun.Ý The camera follows Chi Chi through Los Angeles' sexual underworld, from dirty warehouse sets to an all-star birthday bash.Ý We tag along back to Miss LaRue's humble hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota, peek inside her boyhood, and see the railroad tracks where she used to stash her Playgirl magazines. We spy on a hotel room casting call and wander through a midwestern bathhouse talent search, where for every waking moment, Chi Chi somehow makes sex seem like a bawdy joke.Ý From frothing sociopathic fans (outside a porn industry awards show) to the preening hard-bodied adult stars themselves (almost always lounging poolside), everybody's got something to say about Chi Chi.Ý A close friend whispers that she's changed since getting famous; a random wannabe-model boasts that he's the famous one.Ý The story really is about the Hollywood dream machine, a send-up and a celebration of what it means to turn yourself into a star.Ý And while they may be waxed and fluffed, these folks are definitely not plastic.Ý Sex Becomes Her, like Chi Chi herself, revels in the oddities of its cast and the raucous raunchy world that they inhabit and create.
