In this hilarious French farce, a kind of reverse take on In and
Out,Ý Francois is an unassuming divorced accountant whose life
is in a boring middle-aged rut.Ý He discovers that the corporate dowsizing
axe is about to fall on his head after years of loyal service to -
what else - a condom manufacturer. To the rescue comes his next door
neighbor, a sympathetic older gay man, with a brilliant solution.Ý
In a country where it is illegal to discriminate against homosexuals,
they plot to anonymously leak the news that straight, mousy Francois
is gay, pulling him out of a closet he was never in.Ý They save his
job, but of course the plan has an endless stream of funny, unintended
consequences, as Francois becomes a man reborn.Ý Theres the
female co-workers who used to ignore him but now try to trick him
up with heterosexual seduction at every turn; the group of employees
who right off assume he is after young boys and must be stopped; the
estranged teenage son who finally has what he thinks is the hip dad
he always wanted; and most brilliantly of all, acting great Gerard
Depardieus bigoted lug of a personnel director who, in desperately
going out of his way to prove hes not a homophobe after all,
discovers the cream-puff-within.Ý While recalling a host of classic
comedies of the past, The Closet twists them in a new direction
with a contemporary message: being anti-gay is not only bad public
policy and individual attitude, its just not cool.Ý In French
with English subtitles.
