U.S. PREMIERE
In her feature-film debut, Spike Lee protÈgÈ Shari Carpenter has
created a slick and lively trip through bisexual confusion, with a
young African American lesbian named Kali as our guide. Though she's
smart and fine, this funky-hippie social worker can't hold the attention
of her girlfriend Crystal, an on-the-rise performance artist who thrives
on the adoration and advances of her fans. Kali kicks the cheating
girl out, but finds the singles game isn't any prettier.Ý She gets
a hickey from a sex-machine butch and smoke in her face from a pork
chop-eating homegirl (Kali is a vegetarian).ÝÝ Enter Reese, a lady-killer
co-worker that isn't slowed down by Kali's pesky sexuality.Ý He reads
up on "lesbian culture," mulls it over with his ex-wife,
and even asks Kali herself all those typical straight-guy questions.
And just as Kali starts to feel a hetero vibe herself, now ex-girlfriend
Crystal shows up again, declaring her love.Ý Confused and conflicted,
Kali turns to her Tarot-priestess lesbian godmothers and receives
some remarkably enlightened advice about the fluidity of desire. Watching
the truly radiant Lizzy Davis as Kali rove from Crystal to Reese and
back again, it's almost easy to accept director Carpenter's message
of love being bigger than the narrow identities we inhabit.Ý This
clever and sensual romantic comedy, with its palette of rich Caribbean
colors and a vibrant soundtrack by superstar singer Me'shell Ndegeocello,
gently challenges us to follow our hearts, wherever they may take
us.Ý Director Shari Carpenter will attend the screening and discuss
her film with the audience.
