EAST COAST PREMIERE
Cult-fave Lili Taylor (I Shot Andy Warhol) and bad-girl pop
icon Courtney Love (The People Vs. Larry Flynt) find romance
amidst the banality of suburban life in this touching, defiantly unconventional
tale of self-discovery and new beginnings.Ý Julie Johnson tells
the offbeat story of its title character (Taylor), a New Jersey housewife
who hides science magazines in her kitchen cabinets and longs for
a life beyond the mundane succession of barbecues and parties provided
by Harry, her ungrateful lout of a husband.Ý Sooner than you can say
Gloria Steinem, Julie throws Harry out of the house and starts taking
a computer course, taught by the inspiring Spalding Gray, at the local
high school.Ý Spurred on by her tenacity and drive, Julie's best friend
Claire (Love, strangely appealing as a Jersey girl) also walks out
on her equally neglectful spouse, moving in with Julie and her two
kids.Ý Tension escalates as the two women disover there is more than
friendship between them, and are forced to deal with both their prejudiced
working-class community and their own internalized homophobia.Ý Director
Bob Gosse (Niagara, Niagara) elicits great performances from
his two leads and captures the intimacy of their relationship with
a rare tenderness and earthy sensuality.Ý Julie Johnson's transformation
from dutiful homemaker to aspiring scientist speaks to the dreamer
in all of us, in a film that is a beguiling addition to contemporary
lesbian cinema.Ý With music by Liz Phair.Ý A 2001 Sundance Film
Festival selection.Ý Director Bob Gosse will attend the screening
and discuss the film with the audience.
