From Cuban-American director Mary Guzm·n comes a smart, sexy and
exuberant trip through the world of Latina lesbian romance.Ý A skateboarding
baby-butch named J.T. narrates the tale of Desi, a cute young San
Franciscan who's just dumped her two-timing girlfriend, and, the film's
title notwithstanding, would rather curl up and die than look for
a replacement.Ý But cajoled by friends, soon enough Desi's on the
prowl.Ý From a New Age-type who's allergic to teabags to a glamorous
bombshell who likes to act straight, Desi's dating misadventures will
make you laugh and cringe. Her family, amazingly supportive, nags
her in Spanish that she needs a girlfriend.Ý Her "married"
lesbian friends' precocious daughter won't stop bugging Desi about
her ex.Ý Meanwhile, J.T. has her own romantic fish to fry, positively
obsessed with lesbian performer Marga Gomez.Ý She's certain that,
someday soon, she's destined to meet her idol (in a cameo appearance
in this film perhaps?).Ý The entire ensemble delivers uniformly understated
and down-to-earth performances, and in the title role, the irresistibly
cute Desi del Valle plays miserably-single with winning charm.Ý Punctuated
by skateboard tricks and clever animated sequences, this groundbreaking
diamond-in-the-rough first feature offers an irreverent and vibrant
take on Latina lesbian life, and that universal and elusive quest
for love.
Director Mary Guzm·n, producer Fontana
Butterfield and actress Desi del Valle will attend the screening and
discuss the film with the audience.
